October gets me pumped for Halloween and all things spooky and scary. Not stupid Wes Craven, Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake scary. I like thoughtful, conversation provoking, well acted and intense scary. I have no problem with blood and gore, but it's got to be tempered, serve a higher purpose and accompany a great script. And this brings me to Let Me In, the fantastic remake of the Swedish film, Let The Right One In. The story revolves around a lonely 12 year old boy who befriends his new next door neighbor, a little girl that also happens to be a tormented vampire. Much more along the lines of Interview With a Vampire (fantastic) than Dracula 2000 (ridiculously stupid) Let Me In is directed by Matt Reaves, the director of Cloverfield and brings out wonderful acting from its two child stars Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Moretz, with her expressive eyes, curled lips and great lines like "I'm not a little girl. I''m nothing." is especially mesmerizing. Good vampire movies are fun. Good, realistic vampire movies are even better and that's what I kept thinking as I watched this movie: if there really was a 12 year old vampire girl, part beautiful innocence and part violent beast, her existence would probably be a lot like it is in this movie. If you want a great spooky Halloween scare, see Let Me In.
