Western Classics seem like something of the past. Only three recent films come to mind- Unforgiven, Open Range and 3:10 to Yuma. Thankfully, add True Grit to the list. The Coen Bros. spin of the Charles Portis novel and original 1969 film starring John Wayne is one remake that is an instant classic. Fourteen year old no-nonsense Mattie, played by amazing first time actress Hailee Steinfeld, is chasing down the murderous Tom Cheney (Josh Brolin), the man who gunned down Mattie's father. When the local sheriff won't help, Mattie seeks a man with "True grit." That man turns out to be alcohol abusing Federal Marshall Rooster Cogburn, played by Jeff Bridges in yet another Oscar-caliber role following Crazyheart. There is nothing negative I can say about True Grit. My wife and her girlfriend also loved the film- a strong indicator that it's a great movie appealing to more than just the male fan base. See the movie and set aside the $20.00 to buy the DVD for your Coen Bros. and Clint Eastwood collection. You won't regret it.
